Today’s Doomben 10,000 looks to be a very good race for this time of year, we also see the return from Whobegotyou.
This years field consists of 16 runners all of which could win this race if they run at their best, although we feel there are about 5-6 real chances for the race.
Whobegotyou: The class runner of the race, coming back from a 7 month spell after disappointing in the Cox Plate, his class should put him right in the finish although he is racing against a field that has a lot of fitness on him and barrier 17 will be a worry. We think he is a great place chance but just won’t be able to reel in the leaders in time.
Black Piranha: Will love the track conditions and connections will hope for more rain depending how the track holds up in the previous races will determine his chances if the track see’s a steady amount of rain during the day he is definitely one to include in your multiples.
Albert The Fat: Won the BTC Cup last week against a few of these over 1200m although it seems like he was only hanging on at the end the distance will be a concern. We doubt he will be able to hang onto the lead this week and would have done a lot of early work from barrier 21. We will be leaving him out.
Ghetto Blaster: We tipped him last week and we were happy with his run. Stepping up to 1350m will suit and he should be finishing off the race strongly at odds. If Newitt can find a decent sit during the run he is our top pick of the outsiders.
Phelan Ready: Has been disappointing lately and hasn’t won for over a year, against a quality experienced and more mature field today we doubt he will be in the finish although barrier 5 will help.
Hot Danish: The second favourite for the race and now a Group 1 winner, she will be sitting close to the front and will love the conditions. The rest of the field will need to catch her coming around the bend, we have put her on top due to her good barrier draw.
Ortensia: Goes into the race as the favourite at 4.20/1, the barrier draw (15) is a bit of a worry but we expect her to settle towards the tail of the field. Should be making her run with Whobegotyou from the back of the field. Today will be her test, we wont be taking her at 4.20 against this field.
Cararra: Will be at the front of the field with Hot Danish, likes the conditions and could be a chance at odds although against this field we think he will be going backwards at the 100m mark.
Shellscrape: A very honest galloper, always goes close and at odds should do so again. The distance is a worry, not sure if he will run out the 1350m so we think a place chance at best.
Melito: Has been racing in fantastic form lately, likes a dead/slow track. Won’t be wanting much more rain, but with only 55kg should have fresher legs approaching the last 100m. Drawn a great barrier which will allow her to sit midfield, will need a good ride by Shinn to get her out at the right time or she could find herself being boxed in by the backmarkers.
Paprika: Has finally shown some of her early talent and we hope she can go on with it, today is a huge step up from last run although if she wants to have a good prep during the spring she will need to match it with this field. Likes a dead track but won’t want anymore rain. Place chance at best.
